Water is a vital resource and a very precious one. Helping to reduce water wastage is a great way to save on your water bills and manage better the water resources you use on a daily basis.
Using your water wisely will enable you to protect water supplies and reduce your energy usage. So, how can you use less water in your home? Here are a few ways:
Saving Water In the Kitchen
When washing up, if you have a dishwasher this is the best way to use the minimum amount of water required to clean your dishes. If you also programme your dishwasher to come on at the lowest energy time of the night (say between 12am and 4am) this will also reduce your electricity bills. If you do not have a dishwasher, then use a washing up bowl rather than leaving the tap running whilst cleaning your dishes by hand.
When using washing machines, load the maximum amount of clothes that you can with each wash cycle. Half loads are not water efficient or electricity efficient. You can also programme the machine to come on at the cheapest energy time of the night as with your dishwasher.
Saving Water In the Bathroom
Use a shower rather than a bath for your daily ablutions – showers use so much less water and it is a quick activity allowing you more time to do something else. Use a cup of water when brushing your teeth rather than leaving the tap running. Just by doing a few little things like this you will be amazed at the amount of water saved every day.
Saving Water In the Garden
Collect water in water butts – you can buy rainsaver kits which have everything you need to collect water for watering your plants, flowers and trees. When watering outdoors, use a watering can rather than a hose pipe – you use much less water and the water falling is much more targeted to the roots of the plants. Remember some counties may have a hose pipe ban in operation anyway, so be safe and legal by using watering cans. Watering early evening or early morning is better as during the day the sun can evaporate quite a lot of the water you have put on your garden. Using timed sprinklers can help you do this type of watering even when you are not in.
Saving Water In the House
Indoor plants can be watered using drip feeders or water mats which are great as the plants just take what nourishment they need and you do not have to worry about over watering or under watering them.
So you now have some great tips to help you with saving water usage in and around your home – why not try implementing some or all of them now?
